ZAMBIA in numbers
Zambia is one of the poorest countries of Africa, ranking 165th out of 177 in the poverty rankings. The country also has one of the highest HIV rates in the world: 17% among people aged 15 to 49.
Approximately 80% of the population is unemployed and more than 2/3 of the population lives below the poverty line.
Some complementary data are:

Poor families surviving on less than $1 a day (UNDP 2007);

Limited rates for high school education, with only 23% of applications (UNICEF 2007);

Children and women are most affected by poverty and high HIV/AIDS rates;

High infant mortality rate → every 1,000 children, 182 do not survive the 5th year of life (UNICEF 2007).
